Although well-travelled with his family throughout his childhood, Matt really caught the travel bug during two months in Kenya after graduating from university. After a month volunteering in a school in the shadow of Mount Kenya, the next four weeks included safari in Samburu, beach time on the Swahili coast and a summit of the second highest mountain in Africa.
Having worked in television for three years in London, Matt took a year out to travel the world, taking in South East Asia, Australia (where he lived and worked in Sydney), New Zealand, Fiji and the USA. Upon returning to the UK, Matt quickly opted for a career change and a life in travel.
During his time in the travel industry, Matt has specialised at various times in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean, giving him a broad perspective on luxury, experiential travel and leaving Antarctica as the one remaining continent to explore.
City:
While lacking the physical beauty of Cape Town or the historic grandeur of Italy’s great cities, Hoi An is a destination I have always enjoyed since my first backpacking visit more than a decade ago. The food is delicious, the location dreamy and the architecture outstanding, with accessible luxury at fantastic value.
Restaurant:
The restaurant carriages on the Venice Simplon Orient Express are decadent, historic and bustling with passengers of all ages and backgrounds on the trip of a lifetime. The food is imaginative and incredibly rich: scrambled eggs and fresh lobster delivered to the station in Paris became an instant breakfast favourite.
Memory:
My nine-year-old daughter’s first safari experience was unforgettable. As she watched elephant’s pass heart stoppingly close to our game viewing vehicle and lions sniff the morning air, while learning about the invaluable conservation efforts on the Shamwari Reserve, another safari-addict was added to the family.
